Recognizing the Signs of Trauma

Trauma-related stress reactions are normal reactions by normal people to an abnormal situation.

Most people transition through the phases of reactions and regain normal functioning with time and natural healing.

While the memory of the traumatic event will always be part of one’s life, failure to deal with these reactions in a timely and effective way can have debilitating effects.

Physical:

Sweating
Rapid heart rate
Weakness, fatigue
Headaches, body aches
Muscle tremors, twitches
Difficult breathing
Nausea, vomiting
Thirst
Chills
Dizziness
Sleep disturbance

Cognitive:

Difficulty concentrating
Blaming
Forgetfulness
Confusion
Poor decision making
Memory problems
Heightened or lowered alertness
Disoriented to time, place or person
Difficulty identifying familiar objects or people

Emotional:

Anxiety
Fear
Sadness, depression
Guilt
Anger, irritability
Agitation

Behavioral:

Hyperactive, restless
Withdrawn, isolative
Changes in speech patterns
